Starring: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi
I wasn’t too sure what this movie was when I first heard about it and to be honest, I’m about as unsure now as I was then. There are so many brilliantly madcap elements to this film that I’m not really sure which counts as the main take away. The comedy is brilliantly handled with great performances from all involved, with some surprises, David Thewlis for example has a brief but very memorable appearance. Admittedly seeing Jeff Bridges as anything other than a cowboy did confuse me for a second!
On another note, Philip Seymour Hoffman is glorious in this film and a further example of how amazing a talent he was.
Overall a film with great fun, a genuine feel-good, fun time.
Well received by critics with the film currently holding at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Whilst not as universally loved as Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski was still a largely successful film that garnered plenty of critical acclaim for sharp dialogue and visuals.
The Big Lebowski doesn’t feature as highly in Empire‘s rankings, coming in at number 29 but also receiving a 5 star review.
4.5/5. A truly unique comedy.
